Preparing your pool for summer
Just before summer begins it is a good idea to make sure all accessories and materials required for the pools operation are available and are on hand such as salt, water chemistry test kits etc'. Balance water chemistry levels are essential to the quality of bathing and are essential to your health and wellbeing. First and foremost test pool water and make sure it is properly balanced. Use this table to make sure water levels are properly well-adjusted:
Factors | Ideal levels |
Salt | 3000 – 4500 ppm |
Free Chlorine | 1 – 3 ppm |
pH | 7.0 – 7.8 |
Total alkalinity | 80 – 120 ppm |
Stabilizer (a.k.a Cyanuric acid or conditioner) | 20-70 ppm |
Phosphates | 0-100 ppb |
Nitrates | 0 ppm |
Metals | 0 ppm |
Total dissolved solids (TDS) | < 1200 |
Maintaining pool water levels ensures chlorine is working effectively as well as maximum enjoyment of the pool. Water should be tested periodically to make sure it is still balanced. If the water chemistry needs adjustments, most pool stores can supply you with the appropriate chemicals and procedures.
Add salt to your pool according to its size (see installation manual for exact quantities) and make sure levels reach 3,500 ppm. Once water is balanced turn on the salt system and allow it to monitor and maintain the healthy and pleasant swimming conditions.
